Writer modes
Choose Writer modes for reading, writing, translating, researching, and reviewing a manuscript.
Switch modes from the paper header: Write · Research · Translate · Read.
Think of modes as views over the same manuscript. Switching mode does not copy the paper or discard its sections; it changes the tools and context shown around the current work.
Starting a new paper
On New paper, choose where you are in the process:

| Prepare for translation | DOCX upload → Translate mode |
Journey templates (course/exam, talk-then-paper, etc.) remain under Advanced on the new-paper form or on the Journey tab after create. See Starting a new paper for creation intents, compose DOCX import, and quick blank doc.

Translate edits Weblate segments row by row. Write is for outlining and grounded drafts. Read shows side-by-side or single-column output.
Choose a mode by the question you are answering
| If you are asking… | Use |

| What should this paper say? | Research to form a plan, then Write to draft. |
| How do I improve this paragraph? | Write, then Revise or Polish on the selection. |
| Which passage supports this claim? | Read or the source viewer beside Write. |
| How should this manuscript appear in another language? | Translate, with a source-language DOCX and terminology ready. |
Keyboard and focus tips
Use shortcuts only when the editor is focused; browser or operating-system shortcuts may take precedence elsewhere. On a narrow viewport, controls can move into the overflow menu. If a mode appears unavailable, check whether the paper has finished loading and whether the required source or translation service is configured.
